Overview
Most travellers only see the Pelion Peninsula from the standard main roads, completely missing the true spirit of the mountain. “Off the Grid” is a private, curated 4×4 journey designed to bridge the gap between rugged, wild nature and deep local culture.
Led by a local guide in a private off-road vehicle, this almost 38-kilometer loop uncovers backcountry mountain tracks, hidden chapels, a secret waterfall, and an isolated coastal spot that standard rental cars simply cannot reach.
The Drive: Step-by-Step
KM 0 – 2 | The Village & The Sea View
We meet in Zagora and start driving through the village. We park under a hill and take a short, 5-minute walk up to an old chapel at the top. From here, you get a great view of the whole village, the mountain, and the Aegean Sea while we talk about the local history.
KM 2 – 6 | Through Apples and Chestnuts
We leave the main road and drive on a dirt track through apple orchards and chestnut trees. At the 6th kilometer, we stop for 10 minutes next to another old chapel hidden inside a patch of beech trees. Here, we will talk about how locals used to live and work in these mountains.
KM 6 – 12 | Coffee by the Waterfall
We keep on driving on rugged terrain with a short bit on the asphalt, and then take a dirt road down to a dead end. From there, we walk 10 minutes through beech forest to a stream with a beautiful small waterfall. This is our first big break: We will brew fresh Greek coffee right there on the spot and serve local apples topped with chestnut honey and cinnamon.
KM 12 – 26 | The Quiet Beach & Homemade Lunch
We drive down mainly on asphalt an a short part of of dirt road through forested and cultivated areas, heading towards the coast. We pass Chorefto beach and take a final dirt track to a quiet beach that mostly just locals know about. We walk just 2 minutes to a tiny chapel hidden in the lush coastal forest right above the water. Then we have lunch: a fresh Greek salad made on the spot and a slice of homemade traditional pie.
KM 26 – 38 | The Drive Back
After our lunch, we get back in the car and take the main asphalt road or a combined track of dirt and asphalt directly back to where we started, closing our 38-kilometer loop.
